Walking Through the Past, Present, and Future [2025]

Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad [NO] / Are Lothe Kolbeinsen [NO]

Walking Through the Past, Present, and Future
is a GPS-based sound walk created by Are Lothe Kolbeinsen and Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad that begins at Buran library and continues across Lademoen, Svartlamon, and Nyhavna. The audio walk was their main project as City Artists in Trondheim in 2025.

For the walk, Are Lothe Kolbeinsen and Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad have commissioned, among other things, newly written text and music contributions from Trond Wiger, Siri Gjære, and Marte Huke that are connected to places they have a personal connection to. The texts contain what has been, what is, and thoughts about what is to come in an area in change. During the walk, you will also hear a song by Enok Monk (Trond Wiger and Erlend Smalås), the architect’s vision by Steffen Wellinger, and words and phrases about what creates a city from people from the city. Are Lothe Kolbeinsen and Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad have composed soundscapes and put together the different parts of the walk into a larger whole. The walk has been developed in the ECHOES Interactive Sound Walks app.

The project is supported by Trondheim Municipality, Trøndelag County Council, and Buran Library.
For Meta.Morf the audio walk is a collaboration with Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art.

Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad [NO]

Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad is a composer and performer from the island of Stord in Sunnhordland. She has a background in improvisation and electroacoustic music and works with vocals/song, live electronics, field recordings, and text writing for use in compositions, performances, and installations. She has worked as a composer and musician in theater and dance performances where live electronics and electroacoustic sound images have been a central part of the expression. She is often involved in interdisciplinary projects that seek to equate art expression. Collaborators in recent years have been light artist Evelina Dembacke, dancer and choreographer Siri Jønvtedt, musicians/composers Anne Hytta, Are Lothe Kolbeinsen, Klaus Ellerhusen Holm, and Eira Bjørnstad Foss, dancer and choreographer Marie Rechsteiner, and video artist Espen Tversland. She has also collaborated with the Montreal-based percussion quartet Architek Percussion.

Are Lothe Kolbeinsen [NO]

Are Lothe Kolbeinsen is a musician, composer, and sound artist from Trondheim. He explores musical expressions at the intersection of composition and improvisation, between the acoustic and the electronic, and between a traditional tonal language and more abstract sound. His expression is one in which the guitar and other instruments work together in a musical fabric where all sounds and roles are fundamentally equal and constantly in flux. Inspired by electroacoustic music, he seeks a guitar expression that seamlessly moves between an acoustic and an electronic sound world, where the ideal is for the acoustic and electronic sounds to “merge together.” In recent years, toured extensively with his trio Parallax with Ulrik Ibsen Thorsrud and Torstein Lavik Larsen on different projects, and has done many interdisciplinary projects with writers, composers, and light designer Evelina Dembacke.
