Weaving Voices — Pearla Pigao @ Kunstrom Jakob, Steinkjer Kulturhus
Silje Hovland is a curator at Nils Aas Kunstverksted and Kunstrom Jakob at Steinkjer Cultural Centre. She was educated at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Department of Design, with specialization in furniture design and spatial design/interior architecture, and also holds a practical pedagogical qualification from Nord University.
At Nils Aas Kunstverksted, Hovland works with the management, mediation, and contemporary contextualization of the collection of sculptor Nils Aas (1933–2004), as well as curating changing exhibitions of Nordic contemporary art. The exhibition program places particular emphasis on drawing, materiality, and craft traditions. The annual summer exhibition brings works by Nils Aas into dialogue with invited contemporary artists, examining the relevance of his artistic practice in relation to present-day artistic approaches.
At Kunstrom Jakob, Hovland curates rotating exhibitions of Nordic contemporary art, including exhibitions connected to the Jakob Weidemann Memorial Grant, as well as exhibitions that take Jakob Weidemann’s artistic practice and legacy as their point of departure. Through her curatorial work, Hovland is interested in the relationship between art history and contemporary practice, and in how material-based artistic approaches can be activated in new contexts.
