AFTERLIFE [2024]

ONLY SLIME (Claudia Cox & Tobi Pfeil)

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE?
WHEN WE’RE GONE, WHERE DO WE GO?
WHAT IF LIFE IS JUST A COMPUTER GAME?
LIKE WEARING A VR HEADSET, MAYBE EVERYTHING IS SIMULATED.
IDK.
WHAT’S THE POINT OF EVERYTHING?
HELP.

These questions are at the core of the computer game opera AFTERLIFE, a visceral journey into the unknown. Developed and performed by the interdisciplinary duo ONLY SLIME (Tobi Pfeil and Claudia Cox), AFTERLIFE follows two 3D avatars through an operatic fantasy underworld, embarking on a desperate quest for existential meaning.

Using real-time motion tracking and hyperpop-inspired autotuned vocals with electronics, the performers control their avatars within a game engine, navigating landscapes inspired by Dante’s Inferno and Final Fantasy. As the characters delve deeper into this surreal, simulated world, they grapple with the same timeless questions we all face: Why are we here? What happens after we die? Who—or what—controls our fate?

AFTERLIFE is grounded in a very real near-death experience. In 2021, Claudia Cox had an out-of-body encounter during an acrobatics accident, which inspired this singular blend of staged science fiction and existential exploration. The result is a performance that has been met with rave reviews in Norway, praised for its bold, imaginative storytelling.

The music, drawing on influences from the grandeur of Wagner to the ethereal sounds of Enya, is meticulously composed from beginning to end. Yet, much like life and death themselves, AFTERLIFE feels unpredictable and mysterious.

ONLY SLIME is elastic and radically adaptive.

ONLY SLIME is a shapeshifting artist duo founded in Oslo by Claudia Cox and Tobi Pfeil—fusing theatre, opera, digital art, and immersive technology into high-impact, genre-fluid performance and installation works. Since their explosive debut at Black Box Teater in Oslo in 2024, they have been touring AFTERLIFE across Europe, with their latest performance at Hebbel am Ufer, HAU3 in Berlin in October 2025. AFTERLIFE received international acclaim and was awarded Work of the Year 2025 by the Norwegian Composers Association.

With a bold, signature aesthetic that merges live motion capture, autotuned opera, electronica, black metal, and game engine worlds, ONLY SLIME creates hybrid performance art landscapes where avatars glitch, forests burn, and queer mythologies take root. For them, slime is both symbol and strategy: elastic, emotional, radically adaptive.

Their work dissolves the boundaries between ritual and rave, body and screen—inventing a new theatrical and multimedial aesthetic language for a world in flux. ONLY SLIME was in residence at Det Norske Teatret, Oslo, Norway, in 2025, where they premiered their fantasy opera and festival DRAGONBLOOD, in collaboration with Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and The International Fossefestival. The production was a sold-out success, earning a five-star review in Norway’s national newspaper Aftenposten, which hailed it as “the nerds’ revenge on theatre” and celebrated its bold fusion of technopop, metal, opera, gaming aesthetics, and immersive scenography.
